The development of street improvement plans for downtown districts can present a number of special challenges to the design team. YOUNG &
ASSOCIATES, PA engineers worked closely with property and business owners, design review committees, architects and City Staff to successfully design
and integrate Mead Street improvements into Wichita's historic "Old Towne" District. A balance of streetscape, parking space, pedestrian accessibility, and
traffic circulation was created to meet the challenges of the Old Towne District. Some of the critical design items for the project included:
YOUNG & ASSOCIATES, PA were selected by the City of Wichita to provide design-engineering services for reconstructing Pawnee Avenue, from Broadway
Ave. to Palisade. This section of Pawnee was upgraded to 5-lanes of concrete pavement with a center turn lane and raised medians. Included in the design
were improvements to storm sewers, outfall structures, pedestrian access routes, and landscaping. The resulting design earned the 2007 "Excellence in
Paving Design" for best municipal street and intersection (<30,000 SY) from the Kansas/Missouri Chapter of the American Concrete Pavement Association.
